I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of my followers here on DeviantArt.

The kind words, critiques and favorites over the years have helped to keep me striving to take better photos. I therefore would like to kindly ask all of my friends and here on D.A followers for their further support!

As some may have noticed, I am currently trying to build up my following on FaceBook. If possible I would love for all my fans and friends here on DeviantArt to further support my work and visit, like and share my Facebook Page. If people could also pass the link to my Facebook Page. to their friends as well it would help no end.

As I'm not a professional photographer and make no money from it, its hard for me to spread awareness of my works online as I cannot justify spending money for online ads, and SEO can only do so much. I also cannot keep updating various online galleries as its becoming very time consuming. Currently I run my own website, a Facebook Page, a Flickr Gallery, Twitter, DevaintArt and 500px. As you can guess its very time consuming to keep them all updated regularly. I would much rather have a central place for people to come and visit for regular updates and other information.

My only option therefore is asking for support from communities like the wonderful people here on DeviantArt for their help to spread word of my photographic works.

If everyone reading this that like my work could visit, like and share my Facebook Page I'd be extremely grateful for their support.

And please don't forget to post comments or post any questions or suggestions you have on my Facebook Page whilst you're there!

Thank you again everyone!
Wow! Its been a VERY long time since I made a journal post here on D.A. Its been a long time since I was actually out with my camera to - at least it was until I started heading out again a couple of weeks ago.
Three hectic years saw my hobbies relegated to the back bench as I was consumed by work and other events that were going on - but never again! I'm back!

So what's new?

I've made a vow to improve on my landscape photography and have been out and about scouting new locations regardless of the weather forcast which is new for me. Due to the distance factor and having to start work at 9 - this time of the year I usually only return to my usual haunts that I know I'm all but guaranteed a decent shot.

I've also just sold some of my kit and replaced it with a Nikon D810 and Nikkor 17-35mm f/4. Must say I'm in love with the new body, (altough 36MP is overkill by a long way). As for the lens I love it but not quite as much as the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8 DX lens I parted with. I'm also missing my Sigma 10-20mm but both are useless lens on an FX body. Sure I could use DX mode as I do for wildlife work, but then it would be pointless in owning an FX body.

Finally - I've reasserted my dedication to my website and Facebook page.

I'm redeveloping my Photography Prints website, updating my Facebook page more frequently.

If possible I would love for all my fans and friends here on DeviantArt to visit my Facebook page and show their support by liking and sharing.

As I'm not a professional photographer and make no money from it, its hard for me to spread awareness of my works online.
Not selling prints or providing any photographic services the only people who get to see my work are people here on Deviant Art and people that accidentally stumble across my website.

So if everyone reading this and who like my work could visit, like and share my Facebook page I'd be grateful for your support.

Well I supposed I'd better get on with some work - theres coding to do!
Hi guys

I presently have 5 images entered into the Marwell Wildlife Photography competition for 2011, and this year thye are running a Peoples Choice Award. All entries for the competition are currently up on Flickr at

www.flickr.com/groups/marwellwildlifepeopleschoice2011/

In an attempt to gain Marwell and the competition some exposure, I thought I would post this journal entry and ask my supporters with Flickr accounts to take the time to browse the competition entries and 'Vote' for images they like and deem worthy of the peoples choice award.  Theres some great entries in there. In order to vote, simply 'Favorite' an image from the competition pool.

For reference, my own 5 entries are currently on the TWELFTH page. I originally submitted 5 entries back in Feb but I realised two days ago that the entries were not valid as they were not taken within the last 12 months. (I don't remember seeing that clause in the rules when I originally submitted them but hey ho). I therefore alerted Marwell to the problem and for my honesty they allowed me to submit 5 replacement images.

Please do not feel that any of you have to vote on my entries, but any support is greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.
UPDATE: Sorry guys. The Facebook page was restricted to UK users only for some unknown reason! If you had trouble accessing the page please try again!

Sorry this is a little late coming guys.

I have ditched my group at facebook in favour of a page instead! Please feel free to visit the new page and 'like it' if you'd like to show your support!
Look foward to seeing you all there!

Hi guys.

I need your help! I need to select FIVE images to enter into an upcoming wildlife photography competition. I have selected 20 of my personal fave shots from my archives and now need help dwindling it down to FIVE entries.

If people could download, view and comment with FIVE suggestions from the contact sheet in my gallery I would be grateful.

The contact sheet of images can be found Here. download is enabled on this image so you can get a bigger version of the contact sheet.

Please comment on the image entry with your FIVE selections.  If theres a shot on my website you feel would be a stronger contender in the competition, please let me know!

Thanks in advance guys. Appreciate it.
Hi all.

I'm currently carrying out an experiement / mini project with a new toy I purchased at the weekend. Wiressless LiveView photography of the birds in my gardens whilst i'm sat at my computer coding during work hours.

To find out more, take a trip to my website and visit the blog!  The first shots won't be coming onto d.a as they're only experimental at the moment and i'm not 100% happy with them yet. I'll be perservering and find a suitable perch to place near my feeders so I don't have to include the feeding stations in the shots but please go and check it out and let me know what you think!

Also - if you were registered for my newsletters before I rebuilt my website roughly 3 months ago, please can you signup again as the original mailers database was lost during a server transfer.

Cheers guys and look forward to your comments!

Hey guys

I know, I've been VERY slack this year on the photography front and even slacker here on D.A. But its all going to change in the New Year. I aim to be out and about as much as possible next year and get back into my usual devoted state.

Just a few quick updates.

First of all, I am now on Twitter, Flickr and Still have a Facebook group so if any of you are interested, please feel free to follow me on any or all of them. You can find out more on my website at www.photography-prints.co.uk. Just visit it and use the appropriate social networking icons from the top of the site.

Secondly - I have uploaded a number of shots from my winter photography trip to Donna Nook this gone weekend. I've uploaded two shots here at D.A but there are more on my website, so check them out. There is also a blog entry about the trip that contains a plea to photographers who are intending on ever visiting Donna Nook for seal photography, and contains a bit of information about the Lincs Wildlife Trust trying to keep photographers off of the beach, (and with good reason).

And finally - i'm looking for suggestions from people who might have ideas on how I can get people more interested in my photograhic works, such as ideas for blog entries, new places I could go and capture, and generally some suggestions for how I can keep people coming back to my sites / groups.

What would interest you?

Look forward to hearing from you all!

Cheers Guys.

Justin.
Well its been a VERY long time since my last entry here on deviantart. Over a year in fact.  Its been quite a slack year for me photography wise. Too much work and not enough motivation. That'll change next year.

In the mean time - i've just finish redevloping my website at www.photography-prints from the ground up. It took me 2 days of solid coding for the main administration system and the public site, and then a day to re-process all my photos to put back on the site.  All this between developing other peoples websites at the same time (after all, thats my career).

Anyway I thought i'd drop a line here to try and drive some traffic to the new site so please take a few minutes to go check it out and sign the guestbook.  Please even feel free to contact me and sign up to the mailing list (option from the contact form) to receive my photography related newsletters and articles when I get around to start writing them again.

I look forward to hearing from you all and please let me know if you have any suggestions or find any problems with the new site!

Cheers

Justin.

A Matter of Territory

Journal Entry: Mon May 11, 2009, 9:56 AM

A Matter of Territory

I knew when I took the shot that I had something special. It wasn't technically perfect - backlit by hard sunlight and a being a white subject it was hard controlling the exposure. It took an hour of watching and waiting for the subjects in question to come closer to me whilst I waited on one knee, sinking in mud and engine oil on the outskirts of RSPB Arne - on the edge of Poole Harbour, Dorset, UK.

Was it worth it - I thought so. I loved the shot despite its flaws. I'd heard quite promising things from other people but being over critical of my own work I kept seeing the flaws.

What am I talking about? My shot, 'A Matter of Territory' taken last September. Two little egrets stalking and fighting one another over fishing rights.

A matter of territory by Neutron2K

Why am I now talking about a shot that was taken nearly 8 months ago? The answer: The Sony World Photography Awards 2009.

I mentioned in a previous blog entry on my website a few months ago that I had received a commendation in the Awards for one of my shots, but that I didn't know what shot had been commended. I've now been informed that 'A Matter of Territory' was the commended shot and has been published in the Sony World Photography Awards 2009 hardback Book.

I am so honored its not even real. Out of 35,000 photos, 600 photos (I think it was) were selected for commendation - the top 2%. Wow!

The book is only available directly from Sony WPA and orders are placed via email. I have no idea if the book will be available from Amazon or any bookstores yet but when I get my copy, (i'm ordered tonight - £50!) I'll post an update here on the photographers blog with details of the shot, where it is in the book and how big its been published etc.

Stay tuned...

Keep updated at my website - www.photography-prints.co.uk

A Note of Thanks

Sorry my journals have been slack lately - I've been quite busy with work and things other than photography (unforatuntly).

I've been so busy that I hadn't even realised that my d.a subscription expired a week ago. If it wasn't for a VERY generous fellow deviant I wouldn't of noticed for another month or so.

I'd like to thank fineartbyandrewdavid for his most generous gift of a 3 month subscription. I never ever saw this coming! I just had a random email come through telling me and I was saw here wondering if the guy had a screw loose or if some spammers had been around d.a lol.

Anyway fineartbyandrewdavid has some great varied works in his gallery, especially in his street candid and floral portfolios and I urge everyone to check out his work and give him some support. I've featured some of his works below.

Behind the Scene

Just a quick note to say that I am now running a new articles section on my website at www.photography-prints.co.uk.

In this new 'Behind the Scene' articles section, I will share the tips, tricks and techniques that were employed to capture some of my best shots. The articles will include location information, planning for the shot, light usage, composition, metering, post processing etc - everything that went into the planning and capturing the shot.

These articles will also be emailed to all members and subscribers to the website newsletter so if you havn't signed up up, why not? You can register for my newsletters and behind the scene article updates by visiting www.photography-prints.co.uk/subscribe.asp.

I hope you will all find these articles useful and if you have any comments, on the articles, my website or my photography work in general, please feel free to either drop me a line from the website contact form or sign my guestbook.

The first article is already up in place and has been emailed to my newsletter subscribers. In this article I discuss my recent shot, 'The Stormy Bay'.

Southampton Artists Market

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 23, 2009, 1:09 PM

Southampton Artists Market

I am toying with the idea of doing numerous prints, framing them and then setting up a marquee at one of the Artists Markets in Southampton. They run the first Saturday of each month outside the Bargate centre. The markets are usually quite big, and the amount of people walking past them on a saturady alone would make it good for publicity and maybe sell a print or two. I haven't quite decided yet.

I always thought things like that would costs a fortune to rent the space at a market, but I was reading somewhere earlier from last year that its £30 for a 3x3 metre marquee for the day + electricity if required. Given the electricity, I was also toying about taking my 26" TV with me and running sideshows from my laptop to show the wider range of my works and to promote the website a bit more in case people want to buy prints that I don't have with me on the day.

This is all very sketchy at the moment and a passing idea that i'm kicking around. Will cost a bit to get the prints printed and framed - I might just matte them rather than frame them with clip frames. This is going to take some serious thought but could well pay off.

What does everyone out there think? Let me know via comment below - i'd value any input people have to offer!

Bushy Park Wildlife Trip

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 16, 2009, 2:57 PM

Bushy Park Wildlife Photography Trip

I've finally had what I class as a highly productive and successful trip to
  Bushy Park in London.

I set out at 4.30am yesterday morning, not knowing what to expect from the weather.
I've become increasing hacked off and aggravated by the apparent lack of competence
in the BBC and Metoffice weather forecasts as of late. Ever time i've checked
it over the last three weeks it has been WRONG. So I didn't bother checking
last night and just set out.

When I got there, I had to wait for the gates to open at 6.30 and I immediately
rigged my kit up and set off after a her of fallow deer. Initially I only went
to photograph the birds and get some flight work done, but as soon as I saw
the herd of deer I had to go after them. Why? Because I had a chance to get
one shot I have been dreaming of getting for the last two years. A deer in sunrise
light on a cold morning with its breath hanging in the air.

Was today my lucky day? Did I get that one shot i've been after for so long?
Nope. I got several :) The best of which I have included below (Click for main
  photography print in gallery).

Stag Braeth in the Air

I also managed to pull off a comic shot that I missed on my first
trip to Bushy Park with my mate Jai - who was in the right place at the right
time on that trip, much to my annoyance. Anyway here we are...

Deer with Magpie on Antlers

After following the deer around for just over an hour, with 20kg
of camera kit and a lot of heavy hot camouflage clothing with constant ducking
and crawling, I decided to call it a day with the deer, wiped the sweat from
my brow, demisted my glasses and headed over to the duck pond. Its here that
I achieved what I consider to be one of the best photographs of a Coot that
I have ever seen. That may sound quite big headed of me there, but its rare
I praise my own work but I just love the shots I got of this particular Coot
investigating a twig. The soft morning light, the stillness of the water - all
  was just perfect.

Coot investigating twig

After this and some shots of an Egyptian goose, I headed off round
the pond, taking various other shots of herons and red crested pochards before
finally settling down under a tree for an hour to photography the canadian geese
running across the water and landing. I then headed home, in quite a happy mood
for a change. 3 hours of processing later, I passed out at 3pm for a few hours.
Then I went out for a few hours and am now here writing this blog entry.

All in all a successful weekend - I hope you all enjoy the shots
from the trip. I've uploaded quite a few to the Bushy
  Park
gallery. Feel free to take a look.

Back to work tomorrow, and I have to now think of something interesting
to do for my 27th birthday on wednesday. God I feel old!

Lack of Photography!

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 31, 2009, 2:07 AM

Lack of Photography

Thought I would post a update as I havn't submitted anything for a while and been rather slack on here of late.

The weather is so bad at the moment even going outside is a waste of time. I went on a trip to Winspit, mainly for the walk, with my mate Jake last night which turned out to be a waste of time as the light just wasn't right. I didn't even take a single photo lol. Oh well!

In other news, some of you will be aware, others not, that I had my first magazine cover this month altough I wouldn't say i'm totally happy by the result.  The mags graphics editor has modified the photo by boosting the saturation through the roof, and doing some very poor clone work which now looks bad on me so i'm not happy in the slightest. Next time I will inform them that I will be doing the post processing if they need higher saturation. That sort of thing really isn't on. To say i'm pissed off with that is an understatement.

I really need to find something new to shoot. I need to get back into the landscape and coastal game badly but with the current weather conditions i'm really starting to get frustrated. Ever since I came back from Donna Nook i've been pining to go away to some new places. Unfortunatly money situations at the moment are preventing that! Damn Car MOT and TAX due + repairs and a cruise I have to pay off yet for July. Grrr...

The only other thing of note recently is that the Digital Camera Magazine website got hacked recently and the hackers sent out an abusive email to all the members for the administrators slack security. Thats not good. The sites finally back up and running now, but still, emailing all the members insulting that admins and the mag was pretty pointless.

Sorry this isn't a more interesting journal! Wish I had somthing decent to report!

Until next time...

Good Start to 2009

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 10, 2009, 4:36 AM

Good Start to 2009

Well I hope everyone had a great christmas and new year? Mine was the same as always altough we did go out for a meal as a family with my uncle and aunt and then go drinking new years eve which was great.

Anyway down to business - photography.

Usually my new years sucks and the start of the year is usually filled with misery for me for various reasons but this years (so far) has been different, in terms of my photography.

First of all, I had a shot published in an Accommodation Guide for South West UK. Add to that I also have a shot featured once again in the fantastic Hampshire Life Magazine. Ok that ones nothing unusual - they use my work quite often.

However, I received through the door two days ago a huge card enevelope contain three calendars from Hampshire county Magazine. They contacted me a few months back to source some of my work for their calendar and its finally gone to print and available for purchase!  I have two shots in the calendar, both paid for and they are alongside one of my photographic idles - ADAM BURTON woo.

If anyone would like to purchase a copy of the calendar, pick up a copy of Hampshire County Magazine or contact their sales offive on 0800 137201 (UK Freephone).

As you can guess i'm pretty happy at being featured in a calendar. But thats not all for this month.

I received an email from the editor at Hampshire Life Magazine last night and one of my shots is making front cover for the Feb issue of the mag! My first ever cover shot and thats also paid!

I think i'm going to start targeting other magazines soon to see if their interested in my work. I need to branch out a bit and get my name out there more. Last year was pretty good for me in the publication sense as i'm not yet coutned as pro and havn't yet decided if I want to go pro (STILL!)  But things are still going on which is good :)

If anyone knows any magazines or companies who are looking to commission a nature photographer, give me a shout ;)

Hope you all have a great year in 2009!

Donna Nook Seals Video

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 23, 2008, 10:24 PM

Donna Nook Seals Video

Some of my watchers may be interested to know that I have put together a 5 and a half minute DVD slideshow of some of my work from Donna Nook.

I have uploaded a compressed version of the video to YouTube which you can find here > uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn9uyGn…

This video contains a few disturbing images of seals suffering and death. The injuries the seals have sustained are through various fights, but may also be due to human ignorance, interference and lack of respect for the well being of the seals.

In the case of this video, some people, (especially a few renegade photographers), decide to get far too close to the pups, and when this happens it causes the animals stress. Not only that but in some instances, a pup's mother may either abandon the pup or kill it outright. If the pup is abandoned, they usually drown at high tide or starve to death.

I may well receive a bit of grief over some of the disturbing images in this video (there's only a few), but I am not a typical photographer who will only concentrate on the best looking of my subjects. I will tell the story the way it is and for that I make no apologies.

I have tried to create a story throughout this video -I hope its worked!

The compressed video just doesn't do the shots any justice though. The look so much better full on a TV or better still in their origial form on a computer!

Anyway enjoy and any comments, ratings etc would be much appreciated.

The Donna Nook Report

The Donna Nook Report

WHAT A WEEKEND!

I have NEVER work so hard in my life to get photos. I've been back home since 4am this morning and i'm runnning on empty. I've had around 5 hours sleep since thursday night and i'm dead to the world.

I've just spent 5 hours processing shots and carefully selecting the top 100 shots from my trip that summerizes everything that happened. From gorgeous sunrise, to new born seal pups, to fighting bulls, and unfortunatly the ignorance and direspect of a number of photographers that leads to seal death.

I've uploaded a teaser shot for you guys to check out. Hopefully you'll want to stay tuned for more shots, but they will be a while coming. I have them all initially processed, some fine tuned others need a slight tidy - virutually all of them are straight from camera, including the first submitted shot.

Check my website over the next week or two for an in depth report on the trip and the photos that will not be submitted to D.A

I'm off to bed!

Donna Nook

Donna Nook in T-Minus... 1 hour!

Well i'm not around an hour and a half from departing home in search of Donna Nook for a weekend of Seal photography (if their still there... They should as theres 1300 pups that take three weeks to get their coats before leaving so should be quite a lot left despite recent numbers dropping drastically!).

I'm leaving at 00:30am, hopefully to arrive in time for sunrise. HOWEVER, there won't be a sunrise as its forecast heavy cloud and light rain. Bloody typical. Sunday however promises to be sunny intervals so sunrise / set will definatly be in order, as will sunrise monday morning.

Still havn't decided what time I shall leave for home on monday but most likely before 12pm so I can get home for 5ish. I have work tuesday morning at the office and i'll be a zombie by then.

As it stands I havn't had much sleep this week and I will have been up for 24 hours at 9AM tomorrow morning. By the time I get to the b&b at around 4-5pm, i'll be dead lol.

Anyway wish me luck all.

If you dont hear from me by monday evening (GMT) please call the coastguard as i'm probably sinking in mud 2 miles out from the shore lol.

Have a good weekend all. Catch you soon!

5 Days to Go... and the worrying developments.

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 15, 2008, 6:32 AM

5 Days to Go - Donna Nook

Well I said I would post another update re. my Donna Nook trip this coming saturday, but I wasn't expecting to do it so soon.

Its also not a good news update, but rather sad one.

I've just checked on the wildlife trust site for Lincolnshire and apparently the seals are now rapidly departing, with around 700 of the 990 cows leaving since last monday. I'm starting to get VERY worried that there won't actually be any seals left around for me to photography on saturday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but everything always seems to go against me when I plan a trip and that whole stomach twisting feeling is now starting to set in whereby I want this week to fly by as quickly as possible in hope that the seals won't realise 5 days have gone past and will still be there when I arrive!

I shall email the B&B owners I am staying with on wednesday to see if they know roughly how many seals are left tehre as the seal count on the trust website is only updated on monday. But with only an estimated 200-300 cows remaining, and 500 leaving in the space of a week - well things don't look good.

Theres apparently a record of 1300 pups this year and I have no idea if they have left the beach area yet, and there is no mention of the 330 bulls that were there leaving so hopefully there will still be some around when I arrive!

Keep those fingers crossed, or stand by for a MAJOR tantrum when I return next monday.
