I spent a good 20 minutes approaching this perched heron, taking shots as I crept along the braken and ferns below it. I shot it from various angles and oritenations. Some with sky in, some with the green foliage blurred out behind.

The ONE problem that I never noticed through the LCD is that DAMN BIT OF A WOOD 'overlapping' the bird. Wasted shots. I don't know how I managed to miss that (maybe no sleep in 36 hours again might be somthing to do with it!)

Anyway i've put it up regardless. enjoy.

I too, didn't notice the wood at all.

This shot is great. The composition is spot on. I just... don't take this the wrong way... but the lighting looks kinda' pop-up flash-like to me, which really surprises to me. Is it properly exposed? The foreground just looks to bland and un-contrasty for my tastes.

Otherwise, a stunning capture. I'm guessing it's probably just my odd taste in images.

No flash use - it was hard sunlight which I very rarely shoot in because its so horrible. Its either flat or too hard. Unfortunatly one of those situations where I couldn't do anything about the light.

I understand. I didn't assume it was flash, it just kind of looks it to me.

yeah its the effect of hard sunlight on somthing quite far from the dark trees behind that arn't catching very much light :)

I agree about the wood, and I've been there tons of times. It's till a great shot. I would have loved to see him stretch his wings but that never happens when your out there. ;)

nah its annoying with the wings. I waited and waited and waited and when i lowered the camera it lept and flew off. Behind some trees. Typical lol.

I wouldn't say that the piece of wood ruins it. In fact, I didn't notice it much until I read your comments.

thanks - its nice to hear that. Unfortunatly when you take photography seriously that sort of thing costs you a shot :( Careful planning and composition is essential to winning images and when something like this happens you just kick yourself stupid lol
